New Sculpture Center Show Features “Mixed Reality” Costumes

Fri 9/6 @ 5:30-8PM

This week, the Sculpture Center opens a new show of work called The Dream Continues by Chicago-based “mixed-reality” artist Bun Stout, which we’re told brings together fashion, poetry, drag and augmented reality in handmade augmented reality costumes that “transform wearers, often nightlife personalities, into otherworldly storytellers,” containing what they call their “autobiographical poetry” embedded for the viewer to ferret out. It sounds as if it’s influenced in part by the “sound suits” of another Chicago artist, Nick Cave.

“These poems live secretly in their garment shells, like a soul, mostly unseen but loving each wearer through their various lives,” says the artist statement. “Dreamed up as fashion objects from an imaginary future, in our reality, they are garments for spaces where self-creation is a practice of self-preservation.”

“The works in The Dream Continues reflect the experience of living through a transition of worlds, with one foot in fantasy and the other in decay,” it adds.

The show opens with a reception on Friday September 6 and will be on view through November 2.
