Vocalist/guitarist/composer/visual artist Jenna Fournier has long been known in the local music scene for her dreamy showgaze-adjacent music that’s by turns airy and propulsive. She fronts the group Niights, which has released several albums, has toured Japan where her music has been distributed, and performs as a solo artist under the name Kid Tigrr.
Now she’s releasing her debut album, Stoned and Animald, under the Kid Tigrr name, described in the press release as “an ethereal blend of art-rock, indie folk, and dream pop, painting lush atmospheres around her most intimate writing to date” that addresses issues such as mental health, addiction and abuse. She claims influences from Smashing Pumpkins, Mazzy Star, My Bloody Valentine, CocoRosie, Grimes, and the Cure.
According to Scene, Fournier says the album title alludes to the Bob Dylan tune “Rainy Day Women #12 and #35,” which she has previously covered on a single. Her video for that song was included as part of “Dylan 8.0″ presented as part of a live performance and presentation by CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready and Vanity Crash in celebration of Dylan’s 80th birthday in 2021.
“’Stoned’ is a metaphor for judging in that Bob Dylan song,” she told Scene. “I really liked that. After I did the cover, that’s when the album title came to me. ‘Animald’ is a way to reference survival mode. It’s one of the themes in the old songs. Everyone was in this survival mode during the pandemic. People start hoarding and getting selfish. It’s alluding to the survival mode of the time when this album was made.”
The Cleveland Museum of Art and Cleveland Rocks: Past Present Future’s incubator program have joined forced to present her album release show at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Transformer Station Singer/songwriter/rocker Brent Kirby and musician/filmmaker/game designer Benjamin Liar will open. The show also includes a mixed-media art show curated by Fournier. To get tickets, go here.
