Legendary Takács Quartet and Bandoneon Player Julien Labro Join Forces at Oberlin

Sat 9/28 @ 4:30PM

The Takács Quartet was founded at the Music Academy in Budapest, Hungary in the 1975, and has traveled many miles and had many career milestones in its nearly 50 years, including a Grammy. Now based in Boulder, Colorado, the group still features on original member, cellist András Fejér. But like many long-running string quartets, it’s changed members over the years. First violinist Edward Dusinberre has been with the ensemble since 1993, while second violin Harumi Rhodes and violist Richard O’Neill are recent additions.

The quartet will be launching Oberlin College’s 2024-2025 Artist Recital series at Finney Chapel where they’ll be joined by French-born accordion/bandoneon virtuoso & composer Julien Labro. They’ll play a pair of works that they commissioned specifically for this quintet of instruments: Bryce Dessner’s “Circles” and Clarice Assad’s “Clash.” The program also includes the String Quartet in F Major by Maurice Ravel, “Minguito” by contemporary Argentinian composer/bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi, and original compositions and arrangements by Labro including his arrangement of J.S. Bach’s “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme.”
