Ingenuity Festival’s “Era of Ascent” Kicks Off Its 20th Season

Fri 9/27-Sun 9/29

The Ingenuity Festival is back to kick off its 20th anniversary year, and in that time, it’s evolved and morphed into the biggest artist-driven event in Northeast Ohio. And this year’s theme is “Era of Ascent” hinting at even bigger things to come.

It started back in 2005 with the idea of wedding the arts and technology to activate under-utilized spaces in and around downtown, moving from Public Square to East 4th Street (then a strip of abandoned, crumbling storefronts) to Playhouse Square, then to two fondly remembered years to the trolley level of the Detroit-Superior Bridge to some abandoned warehouses at Northcoast Harbor, where the festival almost died, becoming lost from its original creative impulses.

But then in 2016 it moved into its own dedicated space in the Hamilton Collaborative and things started to pop again, as artists, craftspeople and engineers (collectively called “Ingeneers”) had space to work year-round and could work on a larger scale since things could be created in place. Recently, Ingenuity, already extended over four floors, has taken over even more space in the sprawling former manufacturing building to fill with music, dance, comedy, installations (some of them massive), art displays, fashion, vendors, demos, interactive spaces, displays from a variety of local organizations, and much, much more. The three-day weekend is a feast for the senses with something new to be discovered around every corner.
