Get Creative and Make Art Outside at CMA’s Chalk Festival

Sat 9/14 & Sun 9/15 @ noon-5pm

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s annual Chalk Festival, taking place on the paths around the Fine Arts Garden south of the museum, is one of its signature events created by its former community arts director and local creative sparkplug Robin VanLear. It launched in 1990, inspired by an Italian Renaissance tradition where street artists made chalk copies of religious paintings on the plazas outside cathedrals.

Each year professional artists share their designs: this year’s featured artists are Rafael Valdivieso, Danté Rodriguez, John G., Lacy Talley and Ke Gray. Rising Cleveland Institute of Art students will also be creating designs.

Then, inspired by the work of the pros, individuals, families and community groups can take part as well and create their own designs by purchasing a small square and box of 12 chalk pastels for $15 or a large square and 24 chalk box for $20. It’s free to watch and cheer on your friends!
