Selina Fillinger’s play POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive got a fair amount of acclaim when it opened on Broadway in April 2022. Its cast, which included Lea DeLaria, Rachel Dratch and Julie White (the latter two were nominated for Tonys and Drama League Awards for their performances), surely helped.
But the play sure sounds like a play that meets the current moment. When a (male) president turns a PR blunder into an international crisis seven exceptional women he relies on call on everything they’ve got to get him out of his bind. As a farce, it depends on an ensemble cast with impeccable timing, which the reviews suggested it had on Broadway.
Hopefully some of that magic will take place when Dobama Theatre mounts the Cleveland premiere of the play, just in time for an election which is neither comical nor a farce in the entertainment sense of the word. A casr featuring such outstanding area performers as Nina Domingue, Amiee Collier, Natalie Green, and Nicole Sumlin suggests a positive outcome. Carrie Williams directs the play which opens October 4 and runs through November 3 — two days before the election.
