As it celebrates its 55th anniversary, one of Cleveland’s illustrious college radio station’s, John Carroll University’s WJCU 88.7 FM, has established the WJCU Hall of Fame and will be inducting its first class at a dinner on Saturday October 5 on campus.
Unlike the Rock Hall inductees, people aren’t likely to bicker about this quintet of honorees. Certainly no one is going to argue about the inclusion of Bill Peters, whose Metal on Metal show on Friday evenings has been airing since the early 80s and helped to launch Cleveland’s entire heavy metal scene around Peters’ label Auburn Records. Metal on Metal is still the show to listen to for both new and classic metal, local and international. Another inductee Dan Polletta is also still active in local broadcasting as senior producer and host on public broadcasting Ideastream’s Jazz NEO channel. Two other inductees, Mark Krieger and Joe Madigan, have been longtime essential staff members, helping to run the station. And former Saturday morning rock & roll host Mitch Capka is, well, Mitch Capka — inimitable.
“This has always been a labor of love for me,” says Peters. “It’s hard to believe I’ve been doing my Friday night Metal On Metal show for over 40 years now. I never imagined something like this could have happened when I first started listening to college radio and 88.7 FM as a teenage heavy metal fan. Sometimes the best things in life are unplanned!”
The dinner will be followed by a formal induction ceremony, featuring speeches from several WJCU founders station manager Jasen Sokol and current student air personalities such as Zachary ‘DJ Z13’ Sinutko. Peters, Polletta, Krieger and Madigan have confirmed their intention to be present.
