Cleveland Orchestra Offers Haydn, Schumann & 20th-Century African-American Composer

Thu 10/3 @ 8PM

Fri 10/4 @ 11AM

Sat 10/5 @ 8PM

British conductor Daniel John Harding returns to the stage at Severance Music Center to lead to Cleveland Orchestra for two evenings and one morning of music, headlined by Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, first performed in 1846. It’s described by the Orchestra as “a struggle between light and darkness that ends in hard-won triumph, [it] sounds like the composer’s valiant attempt to will himself back to health after a severe depressive episode.”

Also on the program is Sinfonia No. 2, one of five written by Pulitzer Prize-winning African-American composer George Walker (1922-2018), who studied briefly at Oberlin, among other conservatories. Both evening performances will also feature Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 92 (“Oxford”). Pianist Eric Charnofsky will give the pre-concert lectures.
