Cleveland Classical Guitar Society Launches Season With Free Showcase Concert

Sat 9/14 @ 7:30PM

Each year, the Cleveland Classical Guitar society kicks off its season, prior to its international series, with a free showcase concert to whet listeners’ appetite for classical guitar. It features local players who are standouts on the instrument.

This year the stage at the Maltz Performing Art Center will be shared by two musicians with distinctly different styles. Colin Davin is a young, Cleveland-based classical guitarist who was formerly co-head of the classical guitar department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He appeared on the David Letterman Show with opera singer Jessye Norman and has performed in concert halls and festivals around the world. He currently teaches at the Shenandoah Conservatory in West Virginia and is on the board of the Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project (CUSP) which beings avant-garde, experimental musicians to town.

Brazilian guitarist/vocalist/composer Moises Borges is well known at local audiences from the large number and types of venues and events he’s played in the area, crossing over to pop and jazz. His music is influenced by and pays tribute to his native Bahai, Brazil, which he shares with listeners in his adopted hometown of Cleveland.

Opening the event in Cleveland Classical Guitar Society alum Damian Goggans, a Cleveland School of the Arts graduate currently studying at Oberlin Conservatory. He will play selections from the CCGS-commissioned 14 Études on the Music of Black Americans, based on spirituals.

It’s free but tickets are required. Go here. Tickets will also be available at the door.
