Artist Sarah Curry Explores Women’s Ongoing Challenges in New Prints and Paintings at HEDGE Gallery

Wed 9/18 @ 5-7PM

Fri 9/20 @ 5-8PM

Painter/printmaker/arts educator Sarah Curry is one of HEDGE Gallery’s stable of represented artists, and the next one up to have a solo show of new work going on view this week. Her figurative work focuses on women of all ages and types, and the issues they face in contemporary times.

The paintings and prints on view in Common Threads look at a range of issues confronting women today. One series called The Gravity explores the gap between women today and 50 years ago, how they differ and how they are the same.”

She says, “By juxtaposing 50-year-old images of women with today’s women, I provide a space for the women to communicate. I wonder what they would say and ask others to envision their interactions. Now that women’s reproductive autonomy lacks federal protection, I am hoping this generation of women will push for more relevance and equality before all rights are erased.”

Her O-Liz series is a group of colored monoprints that blends images of 20th-century actress Elizabeth Taylor and contemporary pop musician Lizzo, both of whom dealt with issues of appearance — one a symbol of extreme beauty the other a target for her weight- when they rose to fame.

The show opens with a preview on Wednesday September 18 with an official opening during Third Friday on September 20. It’s on view through Sat 10/26.
