Akron Symphony Opens its Season With Rachmaninoff Concerto

Sat 9/21 @ 7:30PM

This week both of northeast Ohio’s symphonies kick off their 2024-2025 seasons, with the Cleveland Orchestra planting its flag at Severance Music Center and the Akron Symphony Orchestra returning to its home at E.J. Thomas Hall.

The Akron Symphony kicks off its season with one of the best known, most beloved and most challenging piano concertos: Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Cleveland songwriter Eric Carmen had his biggest hit with a song based on the second movement, 1975’s “All by Myself.” Taking on the solo role is Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Martínez who has performed with orchestras and at festivals all over North America and Europe.

The evening’s program will also include the 1938 Symphony No. 3 by Florence Price, one of the very few African-American women noted as a symphonic composer, and George Whitefield Chadwick’s “Jubilee” from his 1904 Symphonic Sketches.
