Fri 9/13 @ 7-9PM
A number of regional museums and arts organizations selected artists from the 2022 (and final) FRONT triennial to mount full shows of their work, and Summit Artspace selected Cleveland mixed-media artist Kasumi for an Exhibition Prize. Her show, Persistence of Vision, a retrospective of her work from the late 1990s through today, is on view in its Main Gallery through Saturday September 14. The show features her signature digital videos and films, as well as prints, painting, collage, and installation.
Before the show closes though, there’s a free screening at Summit Artspace of her film Shockwaves. Described as her “most ambitious and experimental work,” the 82-minute film used 25,000 public domain film samples, animation, dance choreography, live action film clips and sound design to tell a complex story about “a man’s mind as he tries to comprehend the transformation of his life from fairy tale to tragedy,” juxtaposing his memories of falling in love and marrying with a history of trauma that ultimately destroys his happiness.
Kasumi will attend the screening via Zoom, offering an introduction to offer some insight into her creative process in making the film, and a short Q&A following the film.
