Verne Gallery Shows Work by Three Local Artists

Sat 8/24 @ 6-8PM

Sun 8/25 @ 2PM

Verne Gallery in Little Italy is largely known as a dealer of Japanese prints by modern and contemporary artist, as well as prints by non-Japanese artists influenced by Japanese style. The gallery, founded by owner Michael Verne’s father in 1953 after he lived in Japan for a couple of year, has shown its collection at art fairs cross the country as well as at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s annual print fair.

But now this weekend, it’s doing something totally different: it will present the work of three talented Cleveland artists in a show called A Breath of Fresh Air. Any Clevelander who follows the arts scene will know printmaker/collagist Liz Maugans, co-founder and former executive director of Zygote Press and one of the strongest advocacy voices for the area arts scene. Her latest work is a series of florals intended to show resilience in the face of challenges.

Cleveland native John Gregor is known for creating lyrics and music for plays in New York City, and will be showing his watercolors in this area for the first time, while Yuko Kimura has shown widely in museums and will be presenting her traveling exhibit Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper. Gregor will be doing a presentation at the gallery Sunday August 25 @ 2pm.
