Fri 8/23-Sun 8/25
Pop punk has roots going back to the 90s when bands such as the Offspring, Green Day and Blink-182 enjoyed commercial success with a less noisy, more tuneful, but still snotty version of earlier, messier punk rock. By the 2000s it has spawned genres such as the sulky emo and a highly commercialized version embodied in artists such as Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and Avril Lavigne that were more “punk” in their marketing than their music, while a number of bands slotted in the genre, such as Alkaline Trio, Paramore, Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco, were just really good rock bands.
It’s become such a broad term — is Olivia Rodrigo REALLY pop “punk”? and no, Olivia, “Good for You” isn’t remotely the same song as Paramore’s “Misery Business” — that almost anyone of any age or musical taste can find something to relate to. So the Rock Hall’s punk pop weekend may have something for you.
It features a concert by veteran scenesters New England’s Boys Like Girls at 8pm Friday night, followed on Saturday and Sunday by tribute to Southern California indie label Hopeless Records in honor of their 30th anniversary. It includes the label’s “traveling roadshow,” aka “The Hopeless Museum,” with artifacts from some of its best-known bands including the Wonder Years, Sum 41, Avenged Sevenfold and Guttermouth, and a Hopeless Records showcase at noon Saturday.
