Cleveland’s Alla Boara is a band on the move. Founded by local drummer/composer Anthony Taddao, it features some of the area’s best younger (mostly) jazz players, including vocalist Amanda Powell, guitarist Dan Bruce, trumpet players Tommy Lehman, bassist Ian Kinnamon, and accordionist/keyboard player Clay Colley to perform music that’s totally unique in this area, and according to Taddao, in the whole country. It’s based on Alan Lomax’s 1954 Smithsonian Folkways field recordings of nearly extinct Italian folk tunes. Which the band filters through its impressive jazz chops. If that sounds esoteric, it’s not in practice: it has tuneful, high-energy crowd appeal even if you know nothing about the background of Italian folk songs, stories which they share onstage anyway. Expect to see them travelling more extensively soon.
Meanwhile, you can get a taste of their sound for free when they perform at Public Square for the Gigs on the Green concert series. The bar will be open, there’ll be a food truck, and there’s a lot of green space in which to kick back and enjoy a summer evening.
