Cuban pianist Chuchito Valdes is no stranger to Cleveland. He’s performed at Nighttown and at the Lakeland Jazz Fest.
Music tends to run in families, and Chuchito is the son of Chucho Valdés and grandson of Bebo Valdés, both noted pianists and band leaders: his aunt and uncles were musicians as well. He brings that legacy as he intertwines jazz with the distinctive rhythms of the Caribbean especially Cuban genres such as son, danzon, Cuban timba and guaguanco, creating a sound redolent of the infectious, dance-inducing sounds of tropical climates. He recorded and toured with Cuba’s Irakere, and led the band for two years, and he’s performed at festivals and concert halls around the world. He’s currently based in Mexico.
He’ll be back in Cleveland to perform two nights at Market Garden Brewery’s tasting room, located behind the West Side Market parking lot under the big “Beer” sign. He’ll be joined by Cleveland jazz bassist Kip Reed and Cuban drummer Rafael Monteagudo.
Drinks are available but not food, so if you want to eat, arrive in Ohio City early and head for Market Garden Brewery on West 25th. Get concert tickets here.
