Bike Cleveland Community Event Calls Attention to Protected Bike Lanes

Wed 8/14 @ 5-6PM

Thanks in large part to the advocacy efforts of the nonprofit Bike Cleveland, steps are underway to make the city’s streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians. In one such move, the city recently installed plastic bollards along part of a bike lane running through Ohio City’s Hingetown area on Detroit Avenue.

Now Bike Cleveland has put together an event to emphasize the how separated bike lanes contribute to safety, inviting cyclists to gather for an hour at West 33rd and Detroit to highlight this section of the bike lane and advocate for more such protected bike lanes throughout the city.

“As bike riders and safe streets advocates, we commend the city for these initial steps, but we urge them to do more this year,” says Bike Cleveland’s Advocacy & Policy Manager Jenna Thomas in the press release announcing the event. “Every protected bike lane is a step toward a safer Cleveland, but with a significant rise in fatal crashes this year, we need the city to accelerate its commitment to protecting vulnerable road users. Separated bike lanes are not just a luxury—they’re a necessity.”

The organization cites the increase in road fatalities in Cleveland, with 46 people killed so far, as opposed to 32 fatalities at this time last year. Bike Cleveland’s goal is to bring that number to zero.

All cyclists are welcome to join. No registration is required.
