Sat 8/3-Fri 8/23
One of the signs of the onset of August in Cleveland is the return of the long-running Arts in August series to Tremont’s Lincoln Park. Each year, it showcases area music, dance and theater ensembles in free weekend performances that typically dovetail with those groups’ summer performance around the region.
It opens on Saturday August 3 @ 7:30 with Cleveland Public Theatre’s STEP ensemble, a yearly summer program that hires Cleveland teens to write, produce and perform a play of their own creation. This year they’re doing a distinctive take on the old Pinocchio story, which they’re performing in public spaces in different neighborhoods. This is one stop on their eight-performance tour.
The following afternoon at 4pm, another area theater ensemble in the midst of a tour of public spaces around the region stops by Lincoln Park: the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival, currently presenting their version of King Lear.
The second weekend will feature two veteran northeast Ohio dance ensembles: Inlet Dance Theatre on Saturday August 9 and Ohio Contemporary Dance (formerly Verb Ballets) on Saturday August 10, both at 7pm.
The series wraps up with two very different music performances: Papo Ruiz y Dulzura De La Salsa on Friday August 16 @ 7pm and the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra presented by Arts Renaissance Tremont on Friday August 23. Both of those performances are also at 7pm.
No reservations are needed for these free performances; be sure to bring a blanket or lawn chair, and if you wish, something to eat and drink.
