Sibling-Led Band Who Grapple with Climate Change in Their New Album Play at Riverdog Barn

Brother and sister Zak and Lena Kendall started singing as kids growing up in Western Maine, honing their harmonies and eventually going professional with their 2016 debut album Pleasant St. Eventually they added bassist Mike Knowles and drummer Jason Cromwell to become GoldenOak, a folksy, rootsy quartet.

Their sophomore album Room to Grow displays that they’ve already done a lot of growing. It’s got some pretty serious roots. According to their bio, it’s “an analytical work of art backed by empyreal folk music.” Zak’s interest in human ecology found an outlet in lyrics about environmental issues, one of his pressing concerns, on an album described as “a kinetic tribute to the untamed nature of climate change.” And while a song about “the irony of political money etching its name in geological history and the implications of the most privileged people continuing to expand their carbon footprint, endangering less responsible populations in more fragile ecosystems” sounds like it might be clunky and over-serious, the album is both anthemic and beautiful.

GoldenOak will be performing at Riverdog Barn in Lorain County. You’re welcome to bring a picnic and cooler to enjoy before the show. Get tickets here.
