Each summer, Riverdog Barn in Oberlin brings in some of the most interesting touring acts from around the country who play different variations on folk/bluegrass/country/roots music. But the rural outdoor facility also showcases the talented local artists, who helped keep it active during the pandemic when few artists were on the road.
This weekend, they’re bringing back a Riverdog favorite, Rachel Brown and the Beatnik Playboys. Brown, who is from Lorain county, is a strong pianist, a skillful songwriter and powerful, affecting vocalist who blends the heartbreak sound of Patsy Cline with the sass of an Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan, and the hard-hitting raunch of a blues mama. Her band consists of three of the best veteran musicians in the area: bassist Bill Watson, drummer Roy King and guitarist Dave Huddleston.
Doors open at 6pm if you want to relax and picnic; you’re always welcome to bring a picnic basket and cooler, including alcoholic beverages. Tickets are $20. Reserve them here.
