Fri 7/26-Sun 7/27
The BorderLight Theatre Festival is coming to Cleveland, bringing a selection of performance art. Fatima Matar is the creator of Poems of an Angry Feminist, gracing the festival’s lineup with her powerfully-received, multi-media poetry performance at Cibrèo Privato.
Matar will showcase 60 minutes of imagery and poetry containing themes of sexism, misogyny, domestic violence, work place sexual harassment, feminism, motherhood, mental health and immigration.
Matar’s desire to capture the human experience may have influenced her decision to cover such a slew of heavy topics. Deriving inspiration from the heaviest of a woman’s personal experience can result in a shockingly bare, uncomfortably beautiful and honestly ugly revelation between performer and audience.
In 2018, Matar fled Kuwait with her daughter Jori to seek asylum. It became clear to the activist that the hovering threat of prosecution would become a crushing reality, leaving the 38-year-old attorney, law professor and mother with drastically few options.
Since moving to Cleveland Matar has continued producing creative projects. Gaining acclaim through her poignant writing, evidently receiving the Ohio Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council.
Thursday’s performance of Poems of an Angry Feminist will include an ASL interpretation.
Poems of an Angry Feminist is recommended for ages 14+, reserve tickets here.
