Piano Cleveland Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary with “Golden Pianos” in Public Locations

The Cleveland International Piano Competition (CIPC), run by Piano Cleveland, is 50 years old this year. The prestigious competition, which takes place biennially, was originally called the Casedesus Competition, changing its name in the 90s. It has launched many world-class pianists providing them with exposure, career guidance and the chance to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra. It also runs a year-round community education program to engage people with piano music, and a competition for younger artists.

In honor of its 50th anniversary, Piano Cleveland has placed six golden pianos in various locations around Cleveland with weekly 30-45 minute pop-up concerts at each location. (Many will recall the distressed instruments it placed around the city during the pandemic.) At other times, anyone is welcome to sit down at one of the pianos and play.

Locations include Cleveland City Hall with mini-concerts Thursdays at noon; Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace with performances Fridays at 6pm; Cleveland Public Library’s Main Branch with concerts Saturdays at noon; Van Aken District’s Market Hall Sundays at 9am; Tower City outside the Eateries, Thursday July 18 at noon; and Pivot Center, Sundays at 1pm starting July 14.

The “50 Days of CIPC” leads up to the competition’s Final Concerto Round with The Cleveland Orchestra August 9-10.
