Ohio Artist Mary Jo Bole Tells Her Family Story in New Film at Cinematheque

Thu 7/25 @ 7PM

Cleveland-born-and-raised, Columbus-based artist Mary Jo Bole works across a variety of mediums including sculpture, printmaking, installation and film, mining her personal family history as well as found historical artifacts to create resonant, layered work.

She’s spent the past several years working on a film called Family White Elephants, based on what she calls “an “eccentric inherited archive” of photographs, clippings and other ephemera, as well as interviews with her late mother, to cobble together a narrative about her own family lineage, which includes both wealthy industrialists (Carnegies, Rockefellers) and immigrant factory workers, to tell a story about Cleveland’s “Gilded Age.”

The now completed film will have its Cleveland debut at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque as part of its Art House Theater Day celebration. Bole will be at the theater to talk about the film and answer questions from audience members.
