Back about 15 years ago, a quintet called Long Road, featuring some seasoned area musicians, was playing around the area. They offered an eclectic repertoire that reached back to the ’60s folk revival (which some of them were around for), when young people were rediscovering genres such as blues, bluegrass, traditional folk and other indigenous American musical forms. They tossed some psychedelic rock, rockabilly, pop and jazz into their huge repertoire, acquiring local fans until the petered out around the middle of the last decade.
Now one of the park plugs of that group, guitarist/vocalist David Budin, has revived the concept with New Long Road. It includes one of the other former members, Celtic harpist/guitarist/vocalist/banjo player Celia Hollander, plus three new recruits, another 50-year veteran of the area music scene, vocalist Robin Stratton; cellists Julie Myers King; and flutist Linda White.
Their current repertoire includes rearrangements of some favorite songs of the old Long Road, as well as new songs, some of Budin’s original, and Budin’s humorous asides and background stories to set up songs.
They’re performing at Cain Park’s Alma Theatre this Sunday afternoon, and best of all, it’s free.
