The Akron Art Museum’s long-running Downtown @ Dusk series continues with a not-quite-as-long-running band : Akron’s favorite reggae band, Umojah Nation. (The band formed in 2006, the series is 40 years old.)
Their repertoire includes tunes by beloved traditional roots reggae artists like Bob Marley as well as dancehall reggae artists like Buju Banton, mixing the traditional and modern aspects of reggae music. Their spellbinding female singers dress in colorful Caribbean garb and dance onstage to reflect the joyful warmth of the music.
But despite their devotion to the authentic Jamaican reggae sound and presentation, no one in the group is actually from Jamaica. The band is led by the husband-and-wife team of Stefano and Tracey Nguma. She grew up in Akron, he’s from Tanzania via Ethiopia and moved to Akron in the late ’80s to go to school.
The concert, which is free and open to all, takes place in the museum’s Bud and Susie Rogers Garden.
