Cleveland Stories Pop-Up Pays Tribute to Cleveland Radio Icon Mad Daddy

Sat 7/27 @ 2PM

The Music Box Supper Club’s Cleveland Stories programs are typically on midweek evenings. But apparently they had an opportunity for a pop-up program too good to pass up so they booked a Saturday afternoon for this program, another focused on Cleveland’s cultural legacy.

It focuses on the radio personality Pete “Mad Daddy” Myers (1928-1968), the topic of a new book by Cleveland pop culture historians Janice and Mike Olszewski called Mad Daddy: Myers, Mintz and the Moondog and How Cleveland, Ohio Changed Rock Radio. They’ll be on hand, as will Cleveland musician/Cramps founding member Mariam Linna who has released some of Mad Daddy work on her record label, and former area air personality Jim LaBarbara, to talk about the fast-talking DJ who combined off-the-wall humor, crazy stunts, signature slogans and more to create a distinctive persona that many later copied. Although he was on the air for less than two years in the late 50s, echoes of his style was heard in the frantic delivery and zany tactics of many ’60s disc jockeys.

Doors open at 12:30 for lunch; program starts at 2pm. Admission is free; table reservations are a must. Go here.
