What rock & roll fan isn’t familiar with air guitar, or even played a little of it themselves in the midst pf the frenzy and excitement of a concert, imagining themselves onstage?

The Air Guitar World Championships play on that impulse, inviting air guitar players from around the world to compete, first in regional, then in nationals, and finally to take on air guitarists from around the world, this year in Finland.

Maybe a trip to Finland isn’t in the cards for air guitar fans, but luckily for Cleveland fans, the U.S. Air Guitar Nationals are taking place this week right here, at the Beachland Ballroom.

There each competitor will perform to a song of their choice, with the top five advancing to round 2: performing to a surprise song. Each performance is 60 seconds long. “The instrument must be invisible & must be a guitar,” they say. “Air roadies are allowed but must leave the stage before the performance. Back-up bands (air or real) are not allowed.”

The winner will represent the U.S. in Finland, and get possession of the U.S. Air Guitar title belt for a year. Think of the selfies!
