You don’t have to be from Appalachia to love bluegrass music which emerged from the bluegrass state of Kentucky in the 1940s, more or less created by mandolin player Bill Monroe from the British Isles/Celtic folk music, old-time music, blues and gospel that surrounded him in rural Kentucky. Over the years, rock bands such as the Grateful Dead have absorbed it, and artists such as banjo player Bela Fleck have used it as a launching pad into new musical worlds.
The Slocan Ramblers are from the very unbluegrass-y city of Toronto. But since their formation in 2011, they’ve made inroads into the traditional acoustic bluegrass scene in the U.S. performing at major U.S. bluegrass fests, and snagging gigs on the Grand Ole Opry. They hue to tradition in their all-acoustic instrumentation, with mandolinist Adrian Gross, banjo Player Frank Evans, guitarist Darryl Poulsen and bassist Alastair Whitehead, and the latter three providing the traditional bluegrass harmonies.
Their fourth album, 2022’s Up the Hill and Through the Fog, reflects the changes and losses they endured during the pandemic. They’ll be bringing those tunes and their entire repertoire to the Riverdog Barn in Lorain County.
