Don’t tell Donald Trump — he has a pathological fear of, and obsession with, sharks, and once said it would be no loss to the world if all the sharks died — but this week the Greater Cleveland Aquarium launches its monthlong Finfest, a tribute to these scary monsters (which usually aren’t so scary if you leave them alone.)
Dedicated to a category of critters called elasmobranchs which includes sharks, manta rays and stingrays, the event will share a host of new discoveries about these animals. Throughout the month, there’ll be activities such as scuba diver talks, shark feedings and stingray feeds, videos, trivia contest, photo ops with landshark mascot Finn, and hands-on activities with various community partners, along with the chance to see sharks up close in its 250,000-gallon shark habitat. There ae also online components you can take part in.
And of course there’ll be lots of education about the role of sharks in our ecosystem and the threats they face, apart from a former president threatening to extinguish them.
“We want to help guests appreciate how special sharks and rays are and how much they need our help,” says Education Coordinator Matt Debelak. “From keeping foodwebs in balance to cycling nutrients, these animals play important roles in the health of marine ecosystems, but they are disappearing at an alarming rate.” He adds that “The odds of being attacked by a shark are 1 in 11.5 million. Lightning, mosquitos and even cows cause more fatalities than sharks do each year.” Someone alert Trump!
And here’s the cherry on the sundae: wear that shark baseball cap, the joke shark socks your sister gave you for Christmas or even an entire shark costume, and you’ll be entered to win a shark-and-ray themed prize pack from the aquarium’s gift shop.
It’s all included in regular admission. Get more information here.
