The pop-up book — a book with constructions that rise when a page is turned — has a long history, going back to the Middle Ages. While some associate them with children’s books, I attended a program not too long ago at the Newberry Library in Chicago where the lecturer displayed books that had hidden “dirty” images, an early form of pornography. Pop-up books were used for education, to display maps, views of the heavens and more. And of course, artists have used this medium to display their creativity.
Retired University of Akron professor Mark Soppeland has had a long career of making art out of all sorts of things; he’s a master of many arts and crafts. And he’ll be doing a workshop for creatives on the history of pop-up books and demonstrating how to make your own at the gallery of the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve.
