Soak in NE Ohio Knowledge 11 Days at Cleveland History Days

Thu 6/20-Sun 6/30

The Cleveland History Days program debuted in 2018, giving locals a chance to explore various aspects of area history, from arts to sports, architecture to nature, politics to activism, in programs such as talks, walks, and discussions. This year there are more than 50 such programs, hosted by various organizations and overseen by the nonprofit Canalway, over a period of 11 days.

It kicks off with as reception at the Cleveland History Center on Thursday June 20 from 5:30-6:30pm, followed there that evening by a murder mystery set in 1914 Cleveland. On Friday, tour League Park and the Baseball Heritage Museum, spend the morning at the Cuyahoga County Archives, attend a program on Cleveland’s ethnic social halls, or go to a film and discussion at the Cinematheque about sportscasting pioneer Jayne Kennedy of Wickliffe. The program is a great chance to visit some places you’ve long been interested in but just haven’t gotten to: Dunham Tavern, the Cozad-Bates House, the trolley level of the Detroit-Superior Bridge.

Here are just a few examples:

Sunday June 23 from 11am-2pm is Canal Day at the Canal Exploration Center, an open house-type event where you can and your kids can meet actors portraying characters from the 1840s, learn now canal boats, mules and horses traveled (4 mph!) and make something at the crafts table. It’s free and open to all; no reservations are needed.

On Monday June 24 from 2-4pm take a four-mile walk with historical interpreter Doug Kusak from Edgewater Pier to the Wendy Park Bridge on Whiskey Island and learn how the area has evolved from a heavily industrial area to one primary dedicated to recreation. We’re promised he’ll talk about “a landfill, two bridges, hydrology, history, wastewater treatment, industry, and more.” The walk is over paved terrain with no stairs; it’s free and no reservation is required. Meet at Edgewater Pier.
