Fri 6/21-Sat 6/22
The Ohio Scottish Games and Celtic Festival, run by the Scottish American Cultural Society of Ohio, is a crazy feast of activities for anyone who’s into all aspects of Celtic culture.
It’s got everything! There are music and dance performances galore, of course with bagpipe bands, Irish dance schools, highland dancers and more. There are also athletic competitions based on ancient games such as axe and hammer throwing. There are all kinds of exhibits, with border collies, Irish and Scottish dog breeders, bird of prey, British cars and motorcycles, and sheepherding and jousting exhibitions.
There are workshops you can take part in to learn highland dancing yourself and one intriguingly titled “How to start a Scottish clan.” (We’re guessing it helps to be Scottish.) There is of course whiskey tasting, as well as a “wee ones’ area” for those way too young to be partaking of whiskey with their own set of activities and contests. Watch out though — there’s one called “try the bagpipes for first timers” so think carefully if you want to give in to demands for a set of bagpipes for next Christmas.
