Alla Boara Plays Italian Folk Jazz @ Lakewood Front Porch Concert Series

Fri 6/14 @ 7PM

The Cleveland-based ensemble Alla Boara, formed by area jazz drummer Anthony Taddao, is unique in this area. It draws its repertoire from Alan Lomax’s 1954 Smithsonian Folkways field recordings of nearly extinct tunes traditional Italian folk tunes, including regional tunes mostly unknown today, describing them as “folk lullabies, laments, hymns and festival songs [that] are variously surprising, playful, mournful, tender and bewitching.” It gives the music a contemporary twist, drawing on jazz, rock and world music.

The lineup includes six of the area’s top local jazz, pop and classical musicians, but they also perform the music in smaller configurations as well. And for those not interested in tribute band and looking for something different, the Alla Boara Quartet will be playing this week as part of the Lakewood Front Porch series taking place on the front steps of the Lakewood Public Library’s main branch. If the music sounds a little esoteric, don’t be put off: it’s also great fun and appropriate for all ages. It does work in area schools and on its website quotes one young student saying of their performance, “That was the second best thing that happened in my life.” (The first best thing was riding a dolphin.)”

The Front Porch series is free. Grab something to go from one of the nearby restaurants (there seems to be about 50 within a few blocks of the library!) and come enjoy some open-air music.
