Young Cleveland photographer/filmmaker/graphic artist Maya Peroune is still in college (at the School of Visual Arts in New York) but she’s been working on her film project Black Is? for several years. An extension of the images she’s created, many of them (unsurprisingly) of young, Black women, the ambitious film covers a lot of ground. The promotion of it tells us that she “explores the complexities of being black in America through the lens of young adults from various backgrounds and experiences. Discussion of historic Black figures, the American school system, colorism, segregation, beauty standards, and more are at the forefront.”
The Cleveland Print Room, whose teen programs she took part in before going to college, is hosting a screening of the film at the Cedar Lee theater. Afterwards, she’ll talk about the film and her other projects with multidisciplinary artist Shatara Jordan, and take questions from the audience.
The screening is free. Get tickets here.
