It’s been years since air guitar was just something that annoying guy next to you did at a rock concert. It’s become an art — and a competitive sport. And the sixth annual US Air Guitar National Final will be coming to Cleveland for the first time on July 20 at the Beachland Ballroom.
But in the meantime, Cleveland needs to name a hometown competitor to represent it. And that event takes place this week at the Winchester Music Tavern. Up to 20 competitors are expected to take the stage to vie for the job at this event, to be hosted by four-time Cleveland Air Guitar Champion Leigh “AirLeigh Legal” Melendez, and two-time US Air Guitar National Finalist Jerrod “Rick Diesel” Dewey. Each competitor mimes to 60 seconds of a favorite song they’ve chosen and judges of technical merit (does it look real?), stage presence and “airness.” “Airness,” they tell us, is “the quality of performance which transcends the imitation of a real guitar and becomes an art form all on its own.”
