The Cleveland Museum of Art’s long-running (1919-1993) May Show, a juried show featuring work by northeast Ohio artists, was both much anticipated and much reviled. Its demise was celebrated and mourned.
It’s not exactly the same event but the Gallery at Lakewood has been presenting its May Show juried exhibit now for 14 years under the auspices of gallery director Mary Urbas. You’ll find work that’s more diverse, less predictable and includes young artists as well as veterans — partly due to the changing times and the changing art scene, and partly due the increased adventurousness of both artists and curators. This May Show features 80 works by 70 artists, out of 450 works entered by 161 artists, juried by Laura Domencic, an artist, writer and educator who is executive director of the Erie Art Museum.
It opens with an artists’ reception and awards ceremony on Thursday May 16 when more than $4,000 in cash prizes will be awarded, including $1,500 for best in show. It’s free and open to the public.
