Artist Fred Gearhart Hosts His Annual Open Studio & Sculpture Garden

Sat 5/25 & Sun 5/26 @ 1-7PM

When Fred Gearhart retired as a high school history teacher quite a few years ago, he began to devote most of his time to his passion — creating sculpture, mostly in stone, but some wood and cast bronze as well) in a studio he created in the garage at the back of his garden in Cleveland Heights.

Since then, on Memorial Day weekend, he opens his backyard garden, studded with more than 200 of his works set among the flowers, bushes and walkways, and his studio filled with work in progress, for people to visit, browse and buy. His work is both figurative and abstract and comes in all sizes from tiny vases that hold one flower to giant stone statues that could be displayed in a two-story entrance hall in a McMansion. He’s always happy to chat about his work and how he makes it.

His home is at 1609 Rydalmount Road, one block west of Severance Center. You’ll know it by the statuary on the front lawn, as well as the sign he helpfully puts out on the quiet residential street. The open house takes place rain or shine; it’s free and open to the public.
