This season, No Exit New Music, which presents programs of newly composed avant garde-style music as well as the music that influenced it, has been celebrating the Surrealist movement, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary of being a real “movement,” along with its predecessor, Dada.
But now that year comes to a close with one final program called “Breaking the World.” It features an installation, a panel discussion and three concerts with new pieces by composer/pianist Jerome Begin, vocalist/performance artist Lauren Pearl, composer/experimental harpist Stephen Haluska and composer/filmmaker-pianist James Praznik, all composed in 2024 and performed by the composers, and the ensemble’s alternate rendition of Dada pioneer Marcel Duchamp’s 1913 Erratum Musical.
“It’s been a phenomenal year for No Exit,” says No Exit artistic director Timothy Beyer. “One of the most satisfying aspects of this whole Surreality season has been the opportunity to work in mediums and with artists that fall outside of purely musical idioms. Our final series of concerts, “Breaking the World,” will drive home the ideas, methods, and themes that No Exit has been exploring and presenting—the machinations of the unconscious mind, the fantastical and the gloriously illogical.”
In addition, “Breaking the World” features Un Endroit Surréaliste (A Textile Dreamscape), an immersive fabric-and-textile environment created by artists at the Praxis Fiber Workshop. It will be on view there through May 26. And on Sunday May 26, art experts William Robinson, Marianne Berardi and Henry Adams will hold s discussion on Surrealism.
The performances take place at Heights Arts on Thursday May 23; at Praxis Fiber Arts on Friday May 24; and at SPACE Gallery on Saturday May 25. As always No Exit events are free and open to the public.
