Lorain County’s Riverdog Retreat kept its music fans sated with a series of more intimate shows in its gallery during the colder weather. But now it moving back out to the barn for its summer season, where you can sit in the barn or outside depending on your preference, to listen to the folk, bluegrass and other rootsy types of acts it books that are ideally suited to this informal, outdoor location (They always invite you to bring your own picnic basket and cooler, if you choose.) It’s got a full summer season of some of the most stellar such acts from around the country rapidly filling in.
It kicks off this weekend however, drawing from closer to home. Akron’s Hey Mavis open the season with their folk/blues/country/Americana-style music. Together for more than a dozen years, the band features the husband-and-wife team of Laurie and Ed Caner, with Laurie on vocals, songwriting and banjo, and Ed contributing his virtuoso violin skills. They’re supported by the rhythm section of bassist Bryan Thomas and drummer Anthony Taddeo, both noted area jazz musicians with wide musical interests who add a delicate jazzy touch to the tunes. Go here for tickets.
Hey Mavis has released several albums and this weekend, they’ve got a new one. They’ll undoubtedly share some of the tunes (and presumably have copies) at Riverdog. But the official CD release party takes place Saturday at the Kent Stage where the David Mayfield Parade, another rootsy local Akron/Kent ensemble opens. Get tickets here.
