A few years ago, Liza Grossman left the orchestra she founded, the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, to embark on a brand-new project called the Kabooom Collective to educate young musicians about how to forge a career from their skills.
One of its programs is the Kabooom Studio Orchestra, described perhaps a little overheatedly as “a trailblazing force within a collective committed to pushing artistic boundaries and elevating our shared human experience.” We’re also told that the orchestra “invites audiences on a journey through genres, delivering powerful and immersive experiences that challenge the conventional and celebrate the possibilities of contemporary musical artistry.” Oh well, it’s good to be ambitious!
A good sign is that it’s collaborating with a local ensemble that’s already pushing some boundaries and challenging the conventional: Cleveland’s Mourning [A] BLKStar, which artfully various forms of music including soul, blues, electronic, hip hop, and jazz, with poetry and spoken word to make their own statements about our “shared human experience.”
The two groups will be doing a performance called “SONG Jubileeeeeee.” As they describe it “As the timpani drums roll, a single spotlight illuminates a young person, a voice echoing through the hall, transporting you to the year 2054. In this future world, governed by those under 26, the absence of guns marks a shift toward unity and peace.”
It takes place at the Kleist Center for Art and Drama at Baldwin Wallace University. Get tickets and more info here.
