Please, people: stop throwing your trash everywhere! It’s making me crazy! And it’s despoiling our environment, our lakes and our rivers. Just stop!
In early May hundreds of volunteers gathered for the 34th annual RiverSweep to clean up trash — even tires and furniture! — at numerous locations along the Cuyahoga River. At the time I said maybe we should be doing them once a month, given the volume of trash careless people toss. And luckily, a month later Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is hosting its 25th annual watershed cleanup event to pick up trash alongside the Big Creek and Rocky River watersheds. And they need volunteers.
Meet them at one of their five locations at 8:45am for BBQ at Rocky River and pizza at Big Creek; cleanup will run from 9am-noon. There’ll also be raffle prizes at all the locations and environmental education on topics such as backyard composting.
Join the Big Creek cleanup at Brookfield Park on Brookfield Avenue between Bellaire and West 130th; at the Brooklyn Fire Department (8400 Memphis Avenue); and the Snow Road Picnic area along Big Creek Parkway. Join the Rocky River cleanup at the Emerald Necklace Marina Scenic Park Picnic Area and 18900 Cleveland Metro Park Drive in Lakewood.
They’ll provide work gloves and trash bags. You should dress for work, including long sleeves and pants — it’s tick season! Kids under 18 are welcome but must be with an adult Children under 18 must have adult supervision. And pick up after yourself.
