For the 11th Year, Station Hope Celebrates the Path to Freedom and Justice

Sat 5/25 @ 7-10PM

St. John’s Episcopal Church, tucked away on Church Avenue a block south of Detroit Avenue, is Cleveland’s first authenticated Underground Railroad site. It’s surrounded by rapid growth, and gentrification, flashy new housing, trendy eateries and cute little shops, although just a few blocks away is the Lakewood Terrace Public Housing.

And for the eleventh year, it’s where Cleveland Public Theatre is hosting its annual Station Hope event: to explore and celebrate social justice, freedom and equity and look at Cleveland’s own history in the long fight for “liberty and justice for all.”

The church’s campus, which includes two buildings and an outdoor area, and the street in front of it, will be overflowing with performances and installations of all types: music and dance, theater and storytelling, spoken word and visual art, telling a variety of stories about the path to justice. Many of the performers and artists will be familiar from previous years, although new ones always participate.

In addition to historically based stories about slavery and the fight for civil rights, they tell us that pieces will also look at “such contemporary topics as immigration, education, police brutality, human trafficking, gun violence, income inequality, racism, and gender discrimination.”

The event is free and family-friendly.
