World Bee Day is May 20, a day created by the U.N. back in 2017 at the urging of Slovenia, which claims the world’s largest per capita concentration of beekeepers who have practiced their trade for centuries and who currently lead the world in environmentally sound beekeeping practices and “apitourism.”

It’s appropriate that Cleveland, with its large Slovenian community, would honor this day (A few years ago, the theme of its winter Slovenian festival Kurentovanje was bees.) But since it falls on a Monday, the Collaborative Chambers Alliance, the Consulate General of Slovenia in Cleveland, the Euclid Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Cleveland Beekeeping Association, as well as other local beekeepers are hosting an event at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Bee Barn on Saturday May 18.

There’ll be speakers educating people on the role bees play in our ecosystem, particularly agriculture, hands-on learning experiences, a honey bee observation room, a Slovenian bee corner (can you tell a Slovenian bee from an Americans one? I can’t!) and food, drinks and honey products available for sale. It’s family-friendly and open to the public for only a $2 donation to support bee education projects.
