Fri 4/5 @ 7:30PM
Jazz trumpet player Sean Jones was born and raised in Warren, Ohio, where he was exposed to gospel music and later studied both jazz and classical music. He went to college at Youngstown State Unviersity’s Dana School of Music and got his master’s degree at Rutgers, did a stint in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and taught at a number of prestigious universities including Oberlin Conservatory. And back in the early 2010s, he served as artistic director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra from 2010-2015. He’s returned to town to perform frequently since then, including at Tri-C JazzFest.
He’ll be back again with a show he’s put together with Flint, Michigan choreographer/dancer/vocalist Brinae Ali called Dizzy Spellz that features tap dancing and vocals along with the music of renowned jazz trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie. While Ali created the dances, Jones did arrangements that brought together sounds of jazz, bebop and hip hop “to articulate the social vernacular language of the African-American experience.” “Dizzy Spellz offers an Afro-Futuristic lens into a deeper look at the intersecting cultural and spiritual dilemmas within the African diaspora through the music of Dizzy Gillespie,” Jones’ website tells us.
The concert takes place at the Tri-C Metro Auditorium. Get tickets here.
