After serving as the interim executive director for a year, Effie A. Nunes has been officially appointed as executive director of the 64-year-old Cleveland Arts Prize. She has also been on CAP’s board of trustees for seven years. She succeeded Aseelah Shareef who moved on to a position at Karamu House and is currently the CAP board’s co-chair with Kurt Karakul and Kathleen Futey.
Prior to serving as head of CAP, Nunes worked in arts administration, marketing, event planning and public relations, working with organizations such as Kent State University’s College of the Arts and Kent State’s School of Theatre & Dance and its summer theater company, Porthouse Theatre. She was also a partner in the p.r. firm Sevastos & Tsengas.
In the past year, Nunes has worked to create a stronger and more diverse board of trustees, find new sponsorship and foundation funding, reinstating the Verge Fellowship program for emerging artists which debuted in 2018 but never returned after the pandemic until this past year, and launched a new development plan for CAP whose mission was to award prizes to northeast Ohio artists in various disciplines each year.
“I am deeply committed to shining a spotlight on the remarkable artists from northeast Ohio. Their creativity and passion enrich our community in profound ways, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to amplify their voices and showcase their talent to a broader audience,” said Nunes.
