Jesus said, “Welcome the stranger.” Repeatedly. Yet, for decades in the U.S., some of the loudest self-professed “Christians” have also been the loudest voices demonizing immigrants for political gain. We hear endless “the border, the border, the border” (meaning, of course, those darker-skinned Spanish-speaking people from countries “not sending us their best”) and about an “invasion” which suggests a horde with violent intent – when their usual intent is to find a safe place where they can work to earn money to support their families. Scary! They accuse immigrants of bringing “crime,” amplifying an anomalous case of an immigrant killing a young, pretty, white woman while offering nothing to stem the murders of women by male citizens who kill more women in an average week than “illegals” have in the last decade. And recent studies have shown that most economic growth in this country is due to hard-working, productive immigrants.
As part of their series, Forums That Matter, the Unitarian Universalist Society of Cleveland will be addressing the topic “Immigrants: Burden, Blessing, Duty?” Featured speakers are James Nichols, a staff attorney with Catholic Charities’ Migration and Refugee Services; and Dana Beveridge, Associate Attorney with Costas Network Law Center. They’ll share information about the reality of immigration and the best ways to address it and help those with a legitimate claim to be here.
It’s free and open to all. You can also watch on Zoom.
