Cleveland’s Foluke Cultural Arts Center is a nonprofit with the mission of making the arts accessible to everyone, with an emphasis on at-risk young people. It offers programs in dance, voice, theater and visual arts, and offers performances opportunities.
To help fund its work it’s throwing a party called Cültüra Noire: Afro-Latin Masquerade Ball, taking place at The Ballroom at Park Lane, celebrating Afro-Latin culture. That starts with much by the Sammy DeLeon Orchestra, Cleveland’s most prominent practitioners of Latin jazz, with a high-energy sound that makes sitting still a challenge. DJ Omar will keep the dancing going with a mix of Afrobeat, salsa, reggaeton and other infectious sounds. Foluke is inviting people to put on the most extravagant ensembles and masks for this evening. (This event was postponed from January 20, due to bad weather.)
