Third Law Collective, which performs monthly at the BOP STOP, features ten of northeast Ohio’s top jazz musicians, ranging from rising young stars to seasoned veterans such as CSU music professor emeritus, sax player Howie Smith. The ensemble was created as a vehicle to showcase composition and arrangements by the group’s members.
Smith is one of the group’s co-leaders and composers, along with guitarist Dan Bruce, bassist Aidan Plank, sax players Chris Coles and Brad Wagner, and flute player Bryan Kennard, who’s also the director of the BOP STOP. Rounding out the ensemble currently are trumpet player Garrett Folger, trombonist Jason Smith, pianist Joe Leaman and drummer Anthony Taddeo.
Although they typically perform on the last Thursday of the month, they’ll be taking over the club Saturday April 27 for a live recording session featuring music by Bruce, Folger, Plank and Kennard that it’s performed and developed over the past year during its residency nights. And as a little something extra, they’ll be welcoming a special guest trumpet player Russ Johnson who’ll play on four new pieces that were written especially for him to perform with the ensemble.
Johnson spent 23 years in NYC where he became a major player in the jazz scene, playing on more than 100 recordings as a sideman and releasing 10 albums as a band leader or co-leader. He’s toured internationally, performing in nearly 50 countries and has also performed as a classical trumpet player. He recently relocated to Wisconsin where he’s the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin Parkside.
This show will not be streamed. If you don’t go, you’ll have to wait until the record comes out! Get tickets here.
