Brazilian Classical Guitarist/Composer Plays Her Eclectic Music at Maltz Performing Arts Center

Sat 4/13 @ 7:30PM

Brazilian composer/guitarist Badi Assad isn’t typical of the type of artists the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society brings to town. Sure, she had extensive classical guitar training, and of course she’s influenced by the distinctive genres of her native country. But she also performs as a “one-woman band,” something most common among indie pop/rock artists as she plays guitar, bass and sings as well as uses mouth percussion. And jazz and other world music influences find their way into the pieces she composes.

The 57-year-old musician released her first album, Danca do Tons, in 1988; fourteen albums later, she put out Ilha in 2022. She’s currently touring with a program heavy on music by Brazilian composers, mostly living ones (including the well-known Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento) and her own pieces, but there’s one surprise: “Bachelorette” by edgy Icelandic musician Björk.
