Cleveland Uncommon Sounds Project (CUSP) is back with another concert to stretch your ears and mind. It’s headlined by The Ghost, an east coast free jazz trio featuring New York City-based sax player Michael Foster, and Philadelphia bassist John Moran and drummer Joey Sullivan. As is typical with such ensembles, all three musicians boast a long list of collaborations and ensembles. Together they mingle pre-composed structures and improvisational segments, using melodies and samples to offer “a queer perspective to the sax-bass-drums tradition.” It released a recording title Vanished Pleasures on Relative Pitch Records last year.
Kicking off the evening is a duo composed of two musicians who’ll be familiar to local audiences. Both RA Washington and Jah Nada perform with the local act Mourning [A] BLKStar, an eclectic Afrofuturist collective founded by Washington that has won significant acclaim both in and outside of Cleveland. They’ll play music from their debut release In Search for Our Father’s Gardens on Astral Spirits. It’s described as “run[ning] the gamut of sounds from the reverent, to soulful emissions, the meditative drones and rhythms, and more.”
The concert takes place at Convivium 33 Gallery in AsiaTown. Admission is a recommended $15 donation but they emphasis that no one will be turned away if they can’t afford it.
